Home Air Conditioning Unit
my home air conditioning unit is very old. I turned it on a few days ago and it cools the house fine if i turn it down low (about 65 degrees). But if I turn it up any higher than that my house seems warm. Also, I do not think the unit has stopped running in days. What could be the problem? Should I replace my thermostat? I would like to repair it myself. Please HelP! I really need some advice.

If you've done the obvious things like change a dirty filter, then you need to call a professional. Central air conditioning systems aren't designed for homeowner-level repair. Could be a few thing, but probably NOT the thermostat. Evaporator coil may be frozen. Are you getting air flow? If not, it may freeze up and will not allow the air across it to absorb the heat. Turn it off, clean the filter. Once it has been off for 4 to 6 hours, give it another try. Have them come out and take a look at your system. It may be a simple thing to fix and that might hold you over for an nether year or several. However, You may want to not bother with a fix and go for a replacement. Replacing a "very old" unit can cut cost greatly and even totally pay for the replacement in a short time. Current models are much more efficient that the older ones. Also have them check out the whole system for possible problems. Fixing them now can save you money in the long run. Don't worry as much about what brand of equipment as about who is installing it.
