Anyone Have Experience With Space-Gard Media Air Filter?
I need to do something about the dust in my home. Someone I know recommended the Space-Gard media air filter. Below is some information from the mfr.: "The Space-Gard High Efficiency Air Cleaner has been a silent, low-maintenance, inexpensive air filtration system. It utilizes a simple, remarkably effective HEPA-type filtering media that actually improves its
Answer:
I had an HVAC guy install an air cleaner in my home. I had asked him the prices on the high-quality ones, such as an electrostatic, and he suggested that the Space-Gard was the best thing going. It was installed for $600. I can't recall how much the replacement filters are, but it is time to replace one again. There is a key to installing filters of any kind. You have to consider the impact on the heating/cooling system. The quantity of air the furnace will circulate is dependant upon the static pressure losses in the whole system: supply side and return side. A filter with a lot of media will impose more of a burden on the sytem than an electrostatic filter will. We have an electrostatic filter. Acknowledged by ASHRAE (American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, I think--I'm a member, but I always forget!) as very, very effective with allergens, and dust. However, maintenance is a pain. If you don't wash it regularly, then it becomes an emitter of dust, not a collector. The new generation filters use static electicity to attract dust and dirt; dust I understand is charged. So it's attracted to the filter media. If you don't maintain an impingement filter or static charged filter, it will eventually plug solid.
