3 Air Conditioning Compressors Gone Bad In 2yrs!!?
Hi, I moved into my 1995 house about 1 1/2 yrs ago. When we bought the house, we were informed that the A/C compressor had been replaced the previous summer (2000). Last August, the compressor started making occasional 'banging' sounds upon startup and about a week later the compressor fried. We had it replaced then and it seemed to work the remaining 2 months of summer (I am in Phoenix). I just started the A/C up the other day, and after 3 days of running off and on, the banging has started with the new compressor. I am dreading that this compressor is also going to go soon. Luckily the thing is under warranty, but before I just slap another one in, I would like to know if there is something about my system that is causing compressors to fry. Any ideas?
Answer:
Since he is AZ, they do alot of installs there like in California...the Condensor on the roof, and the air handler down below...its possible, that the original installer didnt put an oil trap on the condensor, and hes filling the evap with lube..:) I installed a split system last fall. It ran two weeks and the compressor failed. Checked every thing over, installed a replacement compressor, that one ran two more weeks. Replaced the complete condensing unit, ran 3 weeks, hailed compressor. Replaced the complete condensing unit again, the unit has run fine for 6 months! Keep in mind nothing was changed between each repair. The install was done "by the book" Thee different people, two other techs and a factory rep, could find no problems with the install. Go figure! Although it is very rare to have problems you have! I would suspect a problem with the install, or the methods used to install the replacement compressor.
