Are Electrronic Air Cleaners Suspect ?
Yesterday we attended the Home Expo in Calgery, Alberta and attended the lecture given on Energy Saving by a national figure who has a weekly home improvement show. He stated that an electronic air cleaner was not efficient and not something one should update to. He did not mention any specifics why an electronic air cleaner was not efficient. We purchased and moved into a house with an electronic air cleaner last August. One person I have spoken to who is a sheetmetal worker suggested I should remove the electronic air cleaner, and stated there are companies who make replacement fittings so that you can remove an electronic air cleaner and replace it with a paper filter. Another fellow I spoke to who runs his own air conditioning business said it is a good thing to have. When we moved into the house the electronic air cleaner metal inserts were removed and standing outside the electronic air cleaner and a paper filter was fitted inside the electronic air cleaner, also the paper filter did not fit correctly the size was different. I have since reinstalled the metal inserts and the electronic air cleaner is working, it operates when the furnace comes on. Is there a consensus in regards an electronic air cleaner being a good or bad thing to have on a furnace ?
Answer:
I am too lazy to wash my air cleaner, so I have replaced the elements with a large conventional filter made by Honeywell. Works great. Reminds me of a question I have.I used to have an electronics shop and HVAC had an electonic filter. I t also used a regular filter, I used the fiber kind sprayed with "Filter Koat". The electronic filter gets the last little bit of dust out of the air. In my opinion this is the way they should be used. Also the Filter Koat makes a world of difference. If you cant find Filter Koat spray them with WD-40 and let the filters sit in the sun for a day or two to evaporate all the volatiles leaving a fairly sticky resisdue on the filter. You will be amazed how much better the filter works.
