Broken Electronic Air Filter - Who To Call?
My central AC/heating system has an electronic air filter as opposed to those normal filters. However, it is making an intermittent "popping" noise and cutting in and out, like the electrical current is shutting off and on inside the unit. Its attached to the furnice so removal of it myself is something I'd like to avoid, although I can't imagine a new unit would be all that expensive. So my question is, who do I call to have this fix. An electrician? An air conditioning guy? Someone else?
Answer:
The popping noise can also be larger dirt particles hitting the filter. Sort of like a bug zapper. Mine pops the most when it is first cleaned and I stick it back in. make sure to clean the filters monthly. Mine has a mesh prefilter which I vacuum weekly. I put the large box filters in the dishwasher once a month. I also wipe down the charge wires after washing them to get the dirt off. I have three boys and three dogs so I get alot of dirt in the house. The cleaner should have a light on it. If it is staying off for any length of time then there is a short somewhere to the filter. The last time that happened was when I had a humidifier installed and the water was running down from the humidifier connection and shorting out the filter so it would not work. If it is just a quick snap of on/off then it is the filter working correctly.
