5 Dual 1.8 Doubles As Air Conditioner
I realize this is hardware-related and you probably won't make a house call, but I'd like an opinion before I call Apple for service. Problems are: (a) When I come home from work, 1-2 days a week all of the cooling fans are blowing full-tilt. God knows for how long. (b) No PCI USB card works properly I suspect (a) may be related to (b) I have tried two PCI cards: first the current model Adaptec 5 port. I know it's current, because it requires OS 10.3.x Installed it works some of the time. Sometimes the two printers hooked up won't print, but will do so on restart. Interesting symptom is that with the card installed, the mac takes about 30 seconds to sleep. Power issue? Then I tried a generic (don't remember the manufacturer) card that works consistently on my Quicksilver G4 867. On install the G5 won't start at all-dead "click" On removal, everything is fine. When I first hooked up the G5, there was some kind of sparking or arcing in the area of the pci slots. I'm running 10.3.9 Hardware is: 1.25 GB RAM 200 MB hard drive 80 MB hard drive 80 GB FW 400 hard drive (backup) I do have an Adaptec 3 port FW 400 card installed in one pci slot, which seems to function with no problems. Thank you for your time and assistance.
Answer:
If no USB PCI card works properly, I can suggest removing the USB cards. You should research more for compatible USB cards for your G5. The problem is not likely the software, but not all PCI cards are hardware-compatible with the G5. Those PCI-X slots continue to cause problems for card developers, it seems. Here's a page with some info for you http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G5/G5_usb...eports.html#FW I won't recommend any specific USB 2.0 PCI cards, as none seem to support sleep properly. I haven't looked at all possibilities, but early reports with Tiger shows encouraging news that at least some PCI cards that won't let a system sleep, seem to be working as advertised with Tiger. Meanwhile, what do you do? The USB cards don't play well with your G5. You could try something more current (the 5100 is 2 or 3 years old from before the G5 was realeased, and Adaptec seems to have less interest in actually supporting the Mac), or for best results, use external USB hubs. Any of the good brand names will work better than what you are trying.
