How Much Should It Cost To Repair My Central Air Conditioning Unit?

Question:
The a/c unit is 7 years old and is leaking freon. Last summer (2nd year I have lived in this condo) I had someone come out because it was blowing warm air instead of cold. He said it was leaking and added more freon. This year I have the same problem and a different company recommended repairing the leak (which is located where the pressure release valve connects to a copper tube right at the unit). They said if I continue to just fill up the freon then it will eventually burn out the motor (he compared it to running a car without oil). He is charging $480 for the whole job. Am I getting ripped off?

Answer:
To fix the leak he will have to remove the freon left, fix the leaking area ( which is contaminated by oil) and takes time to clean and solder, replace filter drier and recharge. The charge sounds about right as you may not know every area he/ she will have to deal with. If they are a company with a good reputation , go for it. this charge is within range for the industry in my opinion. I would suggest you call several different companies to give you an estimate on the cost of the repair. See if they all fall in line with the first bid, if not hopefully you will save allot of money. Most will give you a free estimate, if not don't call them out to look at it. Hope that helps
