93 Taurus Air Conditioner Repair

Question:
I'm getting up momentum to repair the air conditioner on my wife's 93 Taurus. One thing I've noted is that "all" the Ford owners I know with cars this age, early 90s, have air conditioners that don't work. Are these problems in general the same thing, or just overall system failures? About my repair. I can hold pressure over many months, but I have a leak. I'm thinking of converting to the newer coolant, rebuilding the compressor (or buying rebuilt) and new dryer. I don't want to assume the leak is the compressor seals, in fact I've used a leak detector and got nothing except maybe a false reading from the air vents, but this supports a possible leaking evaporator. How messy is replacing the evaporator, but more importantly, should it be done as a preventative measure because, aside from my possible false reading, they all fail sooner than later?????

Answer:
I have an 93 Taurus as well. I have had to the air-conditioning redone about 2 years ago. Now its dead again the compressor is frozen, so I have to buy a new or rebuilt one as well as the dryer. I think the outfit that fixed my air-conditioning before didn't do the dryer too. When I get mine fixed I will have to update the seals to coincide with the new freon. Take care
