New HE Furnace And Air Conditioner?

Question:
ROLAND good question... The water heater rental program makes sence for consumers for a few reasons: -no charge service/maint -no charge replacement -affordable rental rates 10-20$ -typically a 15year commitment but depending on who you are with you can buy out Owning a tank is the way to go if you dont mind the up front costs $600-1500$ -Once you have it 6/7 years without a service call you are now saving money vs the rent -warraties are all over the place from a 1year to 10 years some include parts or labour or leak replacement. -unfortunatly tanks are lasting 10-15years its seems so you need to get the 6/7years out of it before it owes you nothing while comparing to renting. I think the attraction to rental tanks is the low rental rates. And all in one coverage. Now the reason i dont recomend renting a furnace. Is simply because today you can get 12years parts and labour coverage with lifetime heat exchanger warranty.... Before the warranties where not that long. A rental furnace comes with a 15year commitment that can be bought out but the buy out is steep. I have been told by our sales people that a person renting is only paying slightly less a month then a person who finances over 5years. The arguement against renting a water heater is you pay for it 3times over the span of a 15year commitment. Tru, but the likelyhood of a water heater going without a service call in 15 years is slim to none especially on these new tanks they are pumping out. Average repair on a tank these days ranges from 200-600$(pretty steep considering a tank is worth 600-1500$ )Add to that the chance of leakage gets higher as the tank gets older i think renting is a sensible option... But its not for everyone, there are many people totally against renting. and thats fine you have to weigh your options. I own my tank but its easy when your a hvac tech i have had 4 years of trouble free operation so far.. That same arguement holds water when we talk of renting a furnace. Todays high eff furnaces come with such strong warranties that you will not see a repair bill for 12 years. And even after 12years you can put the unit on a 130$ insurance plan that would cover what the warranty used to cover. Over 15years you probably will pay out the furnace 3 times or more. But $12000-$21000 over 15years is alot more cash then a tank 1800-4500$ over 15years. At work im told the rental furnace are more attractive to landloards who write off costs. DISCLAIMER my numbers are off the top of my head, they could be higher or lower in reality.
