My Home Air Conditioner Stopped Working
Last week, when it was 100 degrees outside, my air conditioner in the upstairs part of the house stopped blowing air. So, me being the handy guy I am, went into the attic and looked at the big metal box. That didn't seem to help. I saw a sticker on the unit with the name of the company that had done work for the previous owner. We have only lived in this house for about a year (in LE for 6). I called the number and 4 hours later a technician from Air Repair pulled up the drive. I think the guy's name was Jeff or Jay. Anyway, I told him what was going on. He went upstairs, opened the attic and climbed up. He basically did the same thing I had done earlier. He looked at the metal box. He didn't open it. He just looked. He then came down the stairs and told me that the problem couldn't be fixed and that I shouldn't waste any money on this unit. He could have a new unit out the next afternoon for the low price of $3,800.00. He told me I also needed a new thermostat but he would throw that in for free. I don't know too much about air conditioning and I really did not have time to deal with it so I told him to go ahead. As he drove off, my wife, the smart one, asked if I thought I should call around for a second opinion. An hour later, Lloyd Mangum of Mangum Service Company pulled, walked up the stairs, opened the unit, disconnected a couple of wires and 3 minutes later told me the control board was out. He was able to byapss something to get the AC working and told me he could have a new board by the next day. To make a long story short, the next day the board was installed and I gladly paid Mr. Mangum about $350 for his time and the part. In the meantime, while talking to Mr. Mangum, I learned that he was born and raised and stil lives in Little Elm. He told me about the times he came hunting on the "Doc's" farm that is now my house. We talked quite a while and it was very enjoyable. I cannot recommend strongly enough that if you need AC work, call Mr. Mangum at 972-294-1898.
Answer:
Wow, I'll have to make a note of that recommendation. Haven't had any A/C problems yet, but it's only a matter of time. I know when my central heat had problems, I was getting outrageous quotes for what I assumed was a simple problem (ignition). After a bit of research, was able to fix it myself with a $20 part.
