Window Air Conditioner Has Mold In It
Turned it on yesturday and came home today and the white styrofome is black. Where is the mold coming from and how do I get rid of it?
Answer:
Mold needs two things to stay active, 02 and moisture. Unfortunately, you had both the minute you turned it on. If you have anyone in the house that has spore allergy's, I would get a new one. Otherwise, pull it, spray with bleach, and then hose it down. Do this repeatedly as the foam is porious and the mold will grow into it. If you really want to test the results, get a blacklite. Most spore's that you can't see, can be seen with the aid of a black lite. The bleach will kill it, but it also nutrilizes the color, making it clear. Just because you can't see it, does not mean it's gone. And at the end of the season, Make sure you clean it and also wash the filter more often during the season. I think I found the source. Apprently when the filter light comes on, the wife takes the filter out, washes it and puts it back in without letting it dry. Niether one of us has alergies to mold which is a good thing becasue its the big 24,000 btu window unit that weighs 200+ lbs. So taking it out and taking it apart to wash really ain't an option. Neighbors works on HVAC for a living, he told me to spray it with lysol everyday for about a week with it not running and it should disappear.
