A/C Repair Or Replacement

Question:
My wife and I have lived in our house for about 15 months. We had a guy come out to check out our A/C yesterday and there was only 1 pound of freon in the unit (capacity = 6 pounds). He did a leak search and found that the coil will have to be replaced. He is supposed to call us with a quote on Tuesday. Based on what he said and what I've read it sounds like the coil replacement will run in the ballpark of $1500. Our unit is a 12 year old Lennox system that was installed when the house was built, so it's no longer under any sort of warranty. My question is this: Should we replace the outside unit (is this called the compressor?) when we replace the coil? I've read mixed opinions on this. It's probably important to note that this is just AC, it's not a heat pump. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:
Exactly what coil is leaking the condenser(outside) or evaporator(inside)? How many times in 15 months has freon been put in it? How long have you had problems with it? 1500 dollars without knowing all the facts sounds very expensive to me. Lennox units have some of the most expensive parts in the industry so I'm not sure if that has something to do with it. Answer these questions for me and I can give you a little more idea of whats going on. I do this for a living do a search for my name, I've helped a few people here.
