Anyone Know Anything About Car Air Conditioning?
I have a 2002 Jetta and the air conditioning has crapped out on me. It would have a mind of it's own and went back and forth (working at times and then not). Now, nothing. This weekend nearly killed me with this heat. Anybody think I can just take it to a jiffy lube or something? Or do you think I'd have to take it to somewhere else? Thanks
Answer:
Pretty much any time my air conditioner has quit it invloves relpacing the compressor and associated hoses and putting in new refrigerant at about $1500 or more. Could always hope it is the thermostat though. Don't let Jiffy Lube fix it. Take it to the dealer and get it done right. It will be cheaper in the long run. Don't tell me that!! 1500 bucks? I don't think so. I'm supposed to drive to Ensenada tomorrow for a romantic bday and I don't want to be sweltering. I guess I thought this would be easier to fix. This sucks! these are the troubleshooting questions... 1). Does it still blow air when you turn on the fan switch? 2). The A/C switch should have a light... does the light come on when you push the AC switch? 3). When you are at idle and push the A/C switch on or off, do you hear a sound or feel the engine RPM's change a little... like when you push the A/C switch to ON, the engine should drop a few hundred in RPM or sound like it running slower (if you don't have a tach.) 4). Was the air getting warmer slowly or just abruptly got warm (no cooling)? Because it could be the AC fuse, a loose belt (not driving the AC compressor), or even a loose or corroded wire. If the last time it was cooling.. it was cold... then it's not a coolant or leak issue, but something else. But it could still be the compressor.. they can be intermittent... Here's what you do when you go to the repair place... tell them we helped you troublehoot the problem on yelp and the yelpers told you it would not cost any more than $50.
