Air Conditioner Repair ?

Question:
I have just replaced the compressor for my air conditioner. clutch was o.k., also all new belts. added 6 cans of 134a coolant and 1 can of oil. (this is for a 1980 winnebago, 440 dodge). The thermometer reads 68 degrees at engine idle, out of the dash. Seems to me that this is too warm yet. I don't see fluid in the glass eye. What temp. should it get to? What else can I do? I am going to go for a trip around town to see if running at a higher rpm will do it. If not I guess i'll add more coolant. Your imput is very much appreciated,

Answer:
If you don't see any bubbles in the site glass you may have already over fill system. Suggest you check with A/C shop for correct filling directions. Have not personally changed an R-12 system over to R143a. When they first started doing change overs you had to also change the hoses, but from what I have read lately that may not still be true. Also did you use a vacuum pump to remove the air from the system and any remaining R12? DISCLAIMER: I am not an air conditioning expert. All of the above information was imparted to me by those who appear to be a/c experts, however, I did not personally check their credentials so they could have been lying or not have known what they were talking about or it could have been April Fool's Day and they were just kidding. None of the above information is to be considered as legal, medical, or mechanical advice. You have the right to speak to an Attorney. If you waive the right to speak to an Attorney you have the right to speak to a mechanic, provided he can show you his a/c license. Anything I say cannot be held against me, unless I happen to say "Sharon Stone" in which case I do hope you hold her against me. 1. Outlet temperature at idle will not be much more that 20 degrees lower than inlet temperature. In addition, 134a has only about 80% of the cooling capacity of R12. If the system was marginal to start with, it won't get any better. 2. A full sight glass also looks empty. If you didn't have someone watching while filling, you may have overfilled. If you overfill the system, the compressor can become flooded and destroy itself. 3. The dryer MUST be replaced when any line is broken such as replacing the compressor. In addition, a vacuum pump down for at least 30 minutes is critical.
