Help! I Have To Get A New Central Air Conditioner...
I the compressor is gone on my central air conditioner--it is 26 years old. I live in Nebraska, and I have bad asthma and allergies, so I really need central air. It's been 88 degrees in my home for the last week. Any ideas on purchasing, costs, financing, etc? I am clueless...
Answer:
I just bought a 3 1/2 ton Trane a/c unit and I believe it is either 13 or 14 seer (the higher the seer, the more efficient it is). I have a 2,200 square foot house (2-story) and it does the job just fine. The cost of that plus installation (never had one before, so it also included electrical work, etc.) was $3,100. I am also in central Ohio which is quite far from where you are. But I just figured I would throw that out there. And I know there are some places that do have financing available. The air conditioner guy came out to evaluate what kind/size of unit I would need. The one I have now is a 2-ton, and he said the modern day equivalent of that would be more than enough to cool my little bungalow. I need to have the coil in the furnace replaced, and the outside unit, but no pipes or wires (or whatever) inside replaced, because my furnace isn't that old, and he said they could use the piping that is already there. But he is giving a ballpark of $2000 to $2500. He will be sending me his estimate. I don't know if that ballpark is a little high or reasonable; does anyone know of a website that would help me figure out reasonable prices for this region? I already googled, but the results were full of sellers who wanted to give me a call, etc., and I didn't want to go that route.
