Air Conditioner Only Blows Out Defroster Vents

Question:
New to the forum and didn't see this topic. 2001 XLT and no matter what the setting is, the hot or cold air only comes out of the defroster vents - no air comes out of the driver or passenger dash vents. the 2nd and third row overhead vents still work fine. Is this a costly repair?

Answer:
My 1999 Expedition had this problem about three months ago. It began as a intermittent problem that got worse. I first took it to the dealer since it was due for a scheduled maintenance. They apparently forgot to fix it because it wasn't fixed and there wasn't anything on the invoice regarding the blower. I then brought it to a local mechanic who charged me about $124 dollars to replace a vacuum hose. It worked for a few days and then it got worse again. I brought it back to the mechanic and he made a vacuum adjustment and it worked fine after that. Coincidentally, last week I noticed that my heater would blow only cold air. It was diagnosed as a fault blend door actuator with cause about $350 to repair. I was told that the blend door problem and the defroster problem were not related.
