Garage Door Opener Problem

Question:
My mother has a Stanley garage door opener that a friend installed 7-8 years ago. I really need to repair the garage door opener fast! It's given her many problems over the years. It used to open by itself! Now, it opens 4-5 inches when you click the button instead of all the way up! She has to keep clicking to open and close it, but each time it only opens 4-5 inches. Eventually, it does open all the way up. Before the light burned out (apparently), it would flicker alot. Now, she hears a clicking sound instead of the light flickering. Any suggestions? Is it time for a new garage door opener? Or would it be better to repair the garage door opener? Would it be better to have it installed so she can fall back on someone who should know? (BTW, she lives in Colorado, so it tends to get really, really cold sometimes. Does that make a difference?)

Answer:
The thing is probably just maladjusted. Find the instructions and go through the adjustment procedure outlined there. The cold may make a difference as frost heaving, stiff door gaskets, and thermal expansion/contraction can throw off adjustments. It's probably best to have the door adjusted in the winter, as that's the "worst case" time in most cases.
