Locking Power Of A Automatic Garage Door Opener.
I was just curious of which type of automatic garage door openers (chain or gear drive) would have more powerful strength of preventing someone from outside the garage manually lifting the door up after the garage opener has completely shutdown the garage door. I know that both types would lock up the door securely but wondering which type would have more strength jamming the door shut tight after it close.
Answer:
Some garage door experts could probably provide a more accurate answer, but in my educated guess I would have to wonder if the emergency release mechanism of either style door opener would break or release before the drive mechanism would break or release. I'm not sure what the weakest point may actually be. In any case, either one is probably as good or better than most of the factory locking mechanisms that come with most garage doors. As far as the mechanisms go, I would believe that the screw drive type would provide a stronger hold. A lot depends on design.
