Lost The Number To My Sears Garage Door Opener

Question:
Hi- You know the keypad that is on the outside of the garage to open or shut the garage door? I have a Sears unit that is about 5 years old. I misplaced the 4 numbers that would work on it on the keypad. I cannot find in the manual how to clear it and start over again. Any constructive help would be appreciated to clear the memory so I can use it again.

Answer:
I have one that is more like ten years old. In my case, the remote keypad was an add-on unit. Hence it has its own manual, separate from the garage door opener. You might look for a model number on the keypad and see if you can get a manual from Sears. Their service centers can provide manuals for many older products. I can give you a couple of suggestions based on how mine operates. However, there seem to be a couple of different models with very different operation. My external keypad is connected to an internal module that does the logical of recognizing the combination. This module is wired into the garage door opener in a simple two wire configuration that mimics a simple switch closure. If yours is like this, then the combination memory is in the internal module. Mine has a slide switch with one position labeled PROG. In that position, you use the external keypad to enter a new combination. It also has a nine volt battery that powers the memory and logic. Removing the battery clears the combination memory and forces a program mode.
