Garage Door Opener Problems!

Question:
Help, my garage door isn't working. It worked fine when I left to pick up kids from school. Came home opened the garage door via the opener went in the house and hit the garage door openers button to close it. It than started 'jump' and 'jerk' the door down than stopped. It didn't close all the way. When I pushed the button to open the door it just 'hummed' like it was opening the door but the door nor the chain was moving. If I push the door up while the opener is trying to open it does the jumping and jerking thing again so I stopped trying that. I have released the door from the opener and I can manually open and close the door easily . With the door not attached to the opener I can see that the chain is not moving at all when I push to door openers button. All that is happening is the motor running but no chain action. The chain is hanging down a bit from the rail which I don't remember seeing before. Is the chain loose or something? Is it something I can fix myself? It is the wrong time of year to afford someone to come fix it so any advice on what I could do would be much appreciated! Any diagrams of how to do it would be really helpful too. I may need to try this on my own because my hubby is not a "Mr. fix-it" kinda guy but I am not afraid to try myself.

Answer:
This sounds like the chain was slipping on the sprocket just before it failed. Check to see if the chain is on the sprocket, if not you may have to loosen the chain tension adjustment to provide enough slack to get the chain back on the sprocket. Then re tension the chain. Do not over tighten the chain as this will cause rapid wear and strain on the mechanism.
