Garage Door Opener Malfunction

Question:
I have a Genie Pro 98 garage door opener, and have not had many problems with it until today. However, today it was very cold in Cincinnati (about 8 degrees), and after my wife opened the door, and parket her car, it would not close following several attempts. (It went down about 1 foot, and then recoiled back to its original position.) Then, she pushed the button that activates door closer, and at the same time, I very gently pulled on the garage door, and it closed with no problem. Does anyone have any idea as to what is going on? I somehow suspect the cold has something to do with it.

Answer:
Garage doors need a bit more / less downward force, depending on the weather. It seems during periods of high humidty (rain) or cold weather, additional force needs to be cranked in. The opener has adjustments that control "open force" and "close force". Drag out the ladder and have a peek. They are usually a screw head somewhere on the outside of the opener case, and are marked with an arrow indicating which way to turn for additional force. Now, don't get carried away once you find this bugger or you run the risk of killing the cat! Locate the screw labeled "Closing force" and turn it about 1/8 of a turn to increase the force. Try the door. Add more if you need more. You can thank me later.
