Side Mount Garage Door Opener Needed.

Question:
My 20+ year old side mount garage door opener (Overhead Door model 100) has died. Called about 6 local dealers, none of them will do work on a side mount opener (cross beam in garage requires mounting the opener on the side (bicycle chain sprocket located on torsion bar). There is one dealer who only does side mounts because of his patented gizmo, but he is very proud of it at $650 a job (including the opener). All the others can do a "normal" over head job for under $300 (including the opener). I know all the bla bla about the law change a few years ago and agree that the things need to be safe. But "if we can put a man on the moon, why cann't we ..." ... make a side mount door opener? If you have been down this path before, would love to hear your solution.

Answer:
Good point. The problem however is not the opener, or the door, but rather the marriage of the two. It all has to do with volume. Most garage doors have the available room, and operator manufacturers will build a unit which works for the status quo, of which unfortunately you are not a part of. A special unit is available, but because there are not that many of them made, the price per unit rises well above the standard unit. It's sorta like buying a special anything, usually available from specialty stores very expensive.
