Garage Door Opener

Question:
I have a 1/2 hp Chamberlain garage door opener. I finally wore out the plastic main drive gear (it's a worm gear), so I picked up a replacement. It installed just fine. Now when I hit the button, the motor moves in one direction for 1 second....pauses...and reverses direction, then stops. It's not the "up" or "down" stop limits, as it's centered between them. I disconnected the chain from the motor sprocket, and I get the same result. I.m really puzzled. Has anyone had this happen to them? I could call a garage door repairman, but I keep thinking it's something simple that I'm overlooking (plus, my wife would like to park her car in the garage).

Answer:
Simple: Are the sensor eyes properly connected and aligned? Check under the hood too, you may have knocked a wire loose. Worse, but still fixable: A small gear on the bottom of the gear and sprocket assembly should be engaged to the drive gear on the limit switch assembly. It's also possible that the limit switch's drive gear was turned too many times(during the repair process), exceeding the up or down contacts and you opener has become confused. Tip: Don't attach the chain until you get the motor head working. Run it until the it stops at the down limit. Then, at end of the rail opposite the motor, you will see a small hole. Stick a screwdriver in there and manually move the chain until the trolley is stopped by the screwdriver. Then connect the chain to the sprocket on the opener. That will save you lots of trial and error in the adjustment. My wife has been wanting to park her car in the garage for 3 years now
