Sears Garage Door Opener

Question:
Have a Sears garage door opener about 20 years old, came with one remote. It is the type that has a 4 inch by 8 inch box on the wall that is hooked up to the main motor with two bell wires from the base remote. The wall base remove gets it electric power from the two bell wires as it is not the type that is plugged into the wall outlet. I wanted to get another remote and was told that sears does not have them anymore. I bought a Stanley wall remote that has a plug into the wall and you hook up the two bell wires back to the main unit-it came with two remotes, looked great until I hooked it up. The door would not stop going up and down by it self. I think that the alternating current was making it go up and down. Any one have any solution to this? I see where sears has a converter for old garage door openers the new wall box comes with two remotes and it has the rolling code. but it has a plug in transforer and I hate to buy it and get it home and find that I have the same problem with the old stanley remote..

Answer:
Check your local Goodwill or Salvation Army Store / Retail sales store. Our Goodwill store and S/A store here looks like they are a automatic garage door opener store. They have more openers than any of the home and builder supply stores do combined together. I bought the 1/2hp Genie with ext key pad, and 2 remotes, brand new in the box for $12.50. I have since gone back and bought some more genie openers and am in the process of playing around to see if I cam make a door slider from one, as well as an internal gate opener. The original Genie I bought was basically unopened, and only the box had water stains etc, but everything was in the box, unused. Last I recall there was probably 20 or 25 various units there and for the most part contained all the parts to each, with $8.00 being the top price. Why they have the amount of openers they do is anybodies guess, then again it could be due to the turnover of military types and college students as well......as rental homes etc are big here. Perhaps they remove them and get a tax deduction when they leave the area.
