Garage Door Opener Problems
My Sears opener doesn't seem to work anymore. It neither can open or close the garage door. If I disconnect the door from the opener, the door slides well both up and down. With the door disconnected, the opener is not cacpable of moving the chain, unles I push it along. Is my opener fixable or is it toast and should I just shell out for a new one. Appreciate any comments.
Answer:
It sounds like the motor will run but fails to transfer much force to the drive chain. If it is not too old the parts are probably available from Sears. Could be a failed gear or drive pin or clutch or something else. You will need to open it up and look inside, there is a good chance that the problem will be visible. If you fix it yourself the cost will be considerably less than a new unit. With your Sears model number you can log on to the Sears website and view a parts diagram which will show the part numbers. Go to: http://www3.sears.com/ Enter your opener model number and select view diagram for the appropriate assembly to find the part number(s) you need. My Sears opener is 23 years old and still working (no thanks to Sears as they don't carry parts for one this old).
