Help Me Fix A Ladies Garage Door Opener!
My neighbor is a lady who lives alone so I fix things for her when I can but I'm stuck on this one. She has a Chain drive Chamberlain 1/2 horsepower garage door opener with the electric eye. I just repaired where the end of the pole with the chain broke away from above the garage door and tightened the bolts and adjusted the chain BUT When you press the button, the motor turns the chain so that the garage door tries to close even though it IS closed. It strains for a moment (bowing the 'T' rail) and then stops and reverses just a little bit so the door ends up open maybe 1/2 inch. I have no idea why. I will check this NG the next chance I log on but it is usually days between I get here. Same for my email. I DO get my work email right away at TSwi...@Dayzim.com. I'd appreciate any ideas, esp if they were sent to my work address so I could call her right away and tell her not to pay someone some inflated price for what may be a simple repair.
Answer:
My first guess is that the limit switch that stops the motor when the door is fully down is broken. Some openers have the two switches on the track so the moving carrier that the chain pulls back and forth actuates them. I believe Chamberlain has the switches inside the motor housing. If you see two screw adjustments with a right and left arrow next to them, thats the switches.
