Garage Door Opener - Low Ceiling / High Door
My father-in-law needs a garage door opener and I am planning to give him one and install it. Until I took a closer look at his garage door! I have installed two garage door openers on my garages (Genie) and generally understand the process. But I'm sure what to do here.. details follow...Perhaps someone can give me some advice. The door is a simple panel design, single door. Lightweight for the most part. The door travels about 2" below the ceiling and right as it comes down to the ground the gap briefly closes to about 1 1/4". Very tight space to fit the track into. I measured my Genie and the track alone is 2 1/2". I considered cutting into the ceiling and recessing the whole opener between the beams but, as I expected, they run perpendicular to the path of the door. Is there an opener out there that would fit this application? Any thoughts? Many thanks for any advice!
Answer:
The Sears garage door openers can have the header bracket installed on the ceiling.....and even have the track installed upside down...but that only gives you another 1/2 inch. They also sell an optional door clearance bracket for applications like yours (low ceilings), butthey are for sectional doors only. That leaves: notching the top of the door a half inch or so where it would hit the track overhead, or notching the overhead beams the length or the track.....just enough to gain your necessary clearance. If you can gain anything by doing it, the opener can be installed up to two feet off center of the door......
