Sears Garage Door Opener Light Bulb

Question:
I have a 1992 Sears 1/2 hp garage door opener. The garage door opener works just fine. It has 2 light bulbs on the unit that don't work when the door is opened or when operated manually at the switch on the wall. I tried replacing the light bulbs thinking they could be burnt out. But new bulbs don't work either. (I made sure they worked by putting them in another light fixture.) Called Sears repair service and they haven't a clue why the lights don't go on. They suggested *replacing* the *entire unit* (for only $119) since a service call would cost $58!!! Geesh! Gimme a break! All I want is the two light bulbs to work!

Answer:
The lamps are in series with a switch contact on the "light delay unit" (that's the name found on the parts list for my opener which is of the same vintage as yours). That is a heat sensitive strip wound with resistance wire and controls the on time of the lights after the motor has stopped running. I had the same problem and replacement was a very simple matter. If you can't find the appropriate part number at the Sears parts dept perhaps you can use the part for my model. My opener is model 139.655000 and the part number is 1A35.
