Question:
I have a portable air conditioner on rollers. Why do I need to vent air outside thru a tube? How impt is it? It looks like these: http://www.air-n-water.com/portable-air-...

Answer:
A/C units don't make anything. They don't make Carbon Dioxide. They don't make cold air. All an a/c unit does is run warm air through a cold coil of tubes or a radiator and it comes out colder on the other side. It is a heat exchanger. The process of cooling the air does create condensation. So I figure your unit will need to have a drain line. The "hot air" people are talking about is from a fan blowing through the condensing coil in the back. This too may need to have a line outside. The last small portable a/c unit I worked on required a 3 inch vent out of the units back to the outside of the room being cooled. an ac works as such, it pulls the warm abient air in the room through the evaporator which has freon running through it, freon basically "makes" the air cold, the wamr air though is sent to the condenser, and if it is not properly vented then the warm air will just be let back into the room and the ac would be pointless, so to answer your question, if you want it to cool the room then it is key to vent it outside.
