Can I Vent My Portable Air Conditioner Into An Attic Area? I Have A Ridge Vent And Soffits For Ventilation?

Question:
Is anyone familiair with venting into attics or crawl spaces. Will it be too much warm moist air? It is a portable unit no coils would be in attic just vent hose....Also it is a system that says it evaporates the water and exhausts it with the hot air....is this too damp for this setup?

Answer:
That would be perfectly o.k. as the air is warm but dry and it would help the damp up there anyway! Have a great day. If by "vent", you mean that the condensor coils would be in the attic - that would not be a wise choice from the perspective of efficiency. A refrigeration type AC (as opposed to an evaporative cooler) depends on circulating the coolest possible air over those coils (remember, they must dump heat into that airstream, so the cooler the better). Now, if OTOH, you're talking about "up venting" an evaporative "swamp" cooler into the attic space, that is okay as long as the attic is sufficiently vented (as yours sounds like it is). I think this is a building code issue. In my area one cannot discharge a bathroom vent into the attic. You could check with your building department. With your evaporator, you will be discharging moist air into the attic. Not a good idea.
