Portable Air Conditioner For A Sliding Glass Door?

Question:
My bedroom is in the attic, no windows, just a sliding glass door to a balcony. It gets very hot by the end of the day. Is there anyway to use a portable ac and vent it thru the slider? I dont want to spend the money to put in another zone. thankss

Answer:
You could cut a piece of plywood to fit in the opening provided by sliding the door back a little. Cut an outlet in the plywood to run the vents for the portable unit thru it. I'd fix it so the door didnt have to open all the way... just enough for a single vent width in the plywood....if you need two vents, I'd stack them, one over the other. Make the vents the same diameter as that coming out of the portable unit. You can use foam strips to help seal the plywood in place (like those you find shipped with window units... you can get them at any hardware store) this would eliminate any gap between the plywood panel, and the door and frame. Sliding the door against the panel should help hold it in place, though, you might want to look at using a clamp, or bracket to help secure it too. My neighbor used plexiglass to seal off the space between the unit and the door. She took a piece of plexi to a place that cuts it for you (after measuring carefully). I can attest to the fact that the installation looks clean and neat and it's great that she can still see through the space above the air conditioning unit, which would not be the case with plywood! I think she took it to a glass-cutting establishment, but you might get a local frame shop to do it for you. That's what I'm going to try.
