Do Portable Air Conditioners Work OK? What Are The Advantages/disadvantages As Compared To A Window Unit?

Question:
I'm converting part of my garage into an office and am thinking of using a portable instead of a window unit. The room will be insulated, but I live in the Houston area and the summers are hot and humid.

Answer:
room units are cheaper, use that. a portable is like 350, while a one room ac can be had new for 79 bucks.. Don't use either. You would be better off putting in a ductless system. It will cost a little more but it will be a lot more efficient. It would also be a lot more quiet. For more info go to the ductless ac page here. Sure they work, depending on their BTUs, just like window units. Advantage - They can easily be moved to another location and set up fairly easy. Disadvantage - They require venting (they usually come with a venting kit) and some models have reservoirs that collect the condensation and they fill up and have to be emptied occasionally or they will overflow Well, good thing you decided to ask. Compared to a window unit they are less efficient, more noisy and more expensive. I've been keeping on top of the reviews of these units for some time [live in hurricane prone area] Here's a link I've retrieved for you that's a compendium of the reviews. http://www.consumersearch.com/www/house_... that's the best answer and facts that I can offer.
